The countdown to Christmas in Birmingham begins with the arrival of the German market.

Birmingham’s Frankfurt Christmas Market arrives in the city every November. Furthermore it usually stays until just before Christmas – here are the dates for 2019. Planning to go? Book your stay with City Nites!

But if you’re looking for an alternative to the city centre attraction with all its beer and bratwursts, there are other markets to enjoy – although the cathedral market won’t be be returning this year.

They include the floating market, which is making a festive reappearance in the city centre this year.

And with Birmingham having more canals than Venice , the city seems a perfect fit for such a seasonal shopping event.

The RCTA (Roving Canal Traders Association) confirmed it will be holding a Christmas Floating Market on the canal towpath of the Birmingham Mainline Canal, alongside Arena Birmingham, from Thursday, December 5, to Sunday, December 8.

That’s just four days so make the most of it while it’s here.

Arena Birmingham, in King Edwards Road, was formerly the Barclaycard Arena and before that the National Indoor Arena.

The market will be on from 10am to 4pm each day.

A RCTA spokesman said: “There will be lots of trading boats with interesting crafts on sale showing amazing talent and a range of fantastic unique items available for you to buy the perfect Christmas gift.”

The first floating market was held in Birmingham in 2013.

The RCTA later took the idea to several different locations along the waterways network from Chester in the north to Berkhamstead in the south.
